Glossy Black Books is the imprint of J.P. MacDonald Books, named after the raucous Kangaroo Island Glossy Black-cockatoos, resident on the island. These beautiful and noisy birds, an endemic subspecies (Calyptorhynchus lathami halmaturinus) can be seen when driving around the island. They eat the seeds of the drooping sheoaks and breed in large hollow trees. Glossy Blacks are a spectacular sight in flight. Adults have black feathers, with striking red tail feathers.

The Kangaroo Island Glossy Black-cockatoo is an endangered species, along with the Kangaroo Island Echidna, the Kangaroo Island Assassin Spider, and many others. A portion of the profits from each book sold with the Glossy Black Books imprint will go to the Glossy Black-cockatoo Recovery Program.
