Thank you for visiting J.P. MacDonald Books.
On 15 December 2024, my debut science fiction (dystopian technothriller) novel THE WATCHERS was released on Amazon as a paperback and on 16 December 2025 as an eBook. For bookstores, paperback and hardback formats are now available on IngramSpark.
As a debut self-published author, it has been an extremely steep learning curve (picture a rock climber with minimal climbing gear). Authoring a book is one thing but producing a professional product is another thing entirely.
So many freelance professionals have assisted in the production of THE WATCHERS, from developmental and copy-editing professionals to a graphic designer for the cover design and the typesetting, and a marketing professional for meta data optimisation and distribution. Thank you to all of them.
THE WATCHERS is set on Kangaroo Island, which is off the coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia, in the not too distance future. It is a wild ride, on a beautiful island, through AI, genetic engineering, bio-robotics and general mayhem for the rebels. Here is the back cover description:

Ame Goto-Loch, a determined young Japanese-Australian bio-robotics engineer, finds herself trapped on the once-idyllic island after a global financial collapse. With her family presumed dead, she must navigate a world now ruled by the People’s Global Republic (PGR), where AI bio-robotic Watchers and the regime monitor every move.
As she trains in the art of kendo with a katana gifted by her late mother, Ame teams up with a ragtag group of scientists led by the retired spy Harry M. Working in a shed off the grid, the scientists must race against time to create an antidote to a mind-control technology weaponised by the PGR.
As the PGR closes in, the group unleashes their secret weapon: the QAINTS—quantum bio-robotic entities designed to fight back. With the threat of the regime looming, Ame and Captain Dave Hill, an SAS officer, fall in love, forming a bond that transcends the chaos around them. But in this battle for freedom, will their ingenuity, leadership, and connection be enough to ignite a revolution?
